We recently got to sit down and chat with the lovely Aisha from FatHair Jewelry Adorned by Chi inspired collection. Check it out and find out how can get your hands on these amazing pieces!
So first, could you give me a quick background on yourself and how FatHair Jewelry got its start?
Sure! So, my name is Aisha and I’m a lifestyle YouTuber who goes by SkinnyGirlFatHair. I started making loc jewelry at a point in my loc journey when I was bored with my hair. Several friends suggested that I should sell them, so I did! I decided on the name “Fat Hair Jewelry: as a play on “SkinnyGirlFatHair”. Also because my locs were very thick at the time and the pieces I made fit my own locs! I should have added that I started the brand in 2017! It will be a year ago in October.
Love it! So how did you go about finding Adorned by Chi?
So on my channel I love sharing Black woman owned brands with my FatHair Fam. I did a google search one day in 2016 and found Adorned by Chi on a huge list of BOBs. I immediately fell in love with the aesthetic! At this point, Jacque still sold flower crowns and these cute bags that look like milk cartons. My first purchase was one of those bags and the Black & Proud tee! I’ve been a stan ever since. Haha!
Same here! I love the name “FatHair Fam”! It’s amazing. So I know you dabble in cosplay, can you tell me a little bit about that and what’s been your favorite cosplay so far?
Awww thank you! I called my supporter that on a whim and it stuck! So I dabble in cosplay by way of casual character inspired looks. I once did a casual cosplay of Haruhi from “Ouran High School Host Club” for a video. LOL! But my favorite is one I did recently. It was Emeka from Adorned by Chi! He’s a magical boy and, to be honest, I love to cosplay guys or tomboyish girls. Haha!
Speaking of the story, I understand that you’ve created some pieces for FatHair Jewelry that were inspired by the Adorned by Chi story. Can you tell me a little about those and what inspired you to create them?
When I started Fat Hair Jewelry, my first collection was inspired by Sailor Moon. And I had another collection inspired by Princess Jellyfish! I’m a huge manga nerd and find so much inspiration in the color palettes of my fave characters. So, when Jacque first told me about her plans for the story and I saw the characters as she revealed them I knew I HAD to make pieces inspired by them!
What’s been your favorite piece from the collection?
Ooooh such a hard question because I love them all, of course. Haha! But I would say my favorite is the choker design. I love how it wraps around and snakes through a circle in the front! I was proud of myself for coming up with that.
I don’t think I could pick a fav because they’re all so cute! So, wrapping up here, what’s next for you and FatHair Jewelry?
Haha! Thank you so much! Honestly it’s hard to sell the pieces because I want to keep them for myself. Lol! Well, FatHair Jewelry is a fun hobby/side hustle for me (My main job is stay-at-home-mom) so I don’t really know! I’m just going to keep making cute stuff!
Thank you so much Aisha for talking to us! Her pieces inspired by Adaeze are available at her shop, fathairjewelry.com. The rest of the collection is set to be released very soon.
