Last weekend my friends and I flew to Brooklyn New York for my first ever Afropunk. I went in with the expectation that I’d be surrounded by magical black men and women while swaying my life away to cool tunes, but the experience was way better than anything I could have ever imagined!
On day one we rolled seven people deep, donning our Black & Proud Barbie tees and other fun looks!
How gorgeous were these ladies? I just had to snap a pic with my “hair twin”.
I also ran into Mamoudou Athie (Grand Master Flash from The Get Down) and fan-girled like a fool! So many famous people were just strolling around, enjoying the festivities with the rest of us. I have never seen anything like it!
On the second day of Afropunk I decided to go with a more feminine and floaty look. I rocked an Adorned by Chi Bubblegum Princess romper and flowers in my hair.
At the fest I met up with my sister from another mister- Essence from Coloring Pins! She was rocking pins, patches, and a necklace all made by her.
I also ran into this lovely lady wearing a Lupita crown!
Not only were the people amazing but so was the music, of course. I twirled in pure bliss in the grass when Ceelo performed and Janelle Monae was so mesmerizing…there are no words to explain her stage presence.
After the fest:
After the fest my friend Sequoya and I hit the town and ended up at a real “get down” with the real Grand Master Flash on stage! What an experience. I had soooo much fun!

I will definitely be back next year. Did you go to Afropunk? What did you think?
